Do you really need travel insurance?

Nungwe Beach on Zanzibar Island, Tanzania

It's the question that gets asked a lot. When you are traveling the world, anything can go wrong. From missing a flight to losing your luggage to hurricanes, there are so many factors that go into travel that can and will happen.

In October 2017, I found an amazing bargain to go to Zanzibar with my friend for a whole week. We found a great deal with Ethiopian Airlines, but the flight left at 2AM! After having a friend drop us off at the airport, we found out that the flight had been canceled. We had no email, no phone call, and we were stuck at the airport. Luckily, we had opted for the travel insurance, and were on the flight the next day. Let me just fill you in, if you've never been to Zanzibar before: BLUEST. WATER. EVER.

Now, we aren't saying that it WILL happen to you, but we're saying it can. Some estimate that 3 reports out of every 1,000 passengers are made on lost luggage, and around 5% of flyers miss their flight—these numbers are world wide. In Africa the percentage of lost baggage, or a missed flight, are much greater.

Things can happen.

I, myself, have learned the hard way when vacationing to the Bahamas. A hurricane came through a few years ago, and I wasn't able to make my trip. No travel insurance—no refund. Let's just say I lost out on more than I was happy to admit.

What is travel insurance used for?

If...

  1. Your flight gets canceled, or you miss your connection

  2. You have to cancel your trip for some reason

  3. A natural disaster happens (hurricane, earthquake, flood, etc.)

  4. Terrorist event

  5. You get hurt or sick on your trip, and need to seek medical assistance

  6. Your luggage gets lost or rummaged through

  7. Lose your passport

  8. You need emergency assistance

The question is again, do you need travel insurance?

YES! When traveling in Africa it is a requirement for most places and definitely recommended! You never know what can happen in the bush, and being protected from the unknown is the smart choice.

We recommend World Nomads. They're great if you are on a budget, as well as luxury safaris. Fill out the form below to get a quote today!
